SPECIAL NOTICE ON BUSINESS TAX COLLECTION AND REMITTING
On June 30, 2009, Governor Bredesen signed Public Chapter 530, shifting the administration and collection of business tax from local municipalities and counties to the Department of Revenue. In 2013 the state passed the Uniformity and Small Business Relief Act that made it a requirement to obtain a business license in all counties.
This change is a true partnership between state and local officials. Annual business tax returns will now be filed electronically thru the Tennessee Department of Revenue’s website. The department will collect all delinquent taxes and handle all necessary audit functions. Businesses will continue to obtain business licenses from the county clerk and/or municipal officials, and clerks and municipal officials will continue to administer transient vendor licenses.
Special Note: Starting in 2014, the Tennessee Department of Revenue is requiring all tax filings to be done electronically. Click on the link below for more information and to register your business license account online to file your business tax
